Biochar is produced by pyrolysis, a process of chemical decomposition of organic material at elevated temperatures in the absence of oxygen.

Biochar systems relate to biochar technology, pyrolysis, feedstock, agriculture use as well as to the process necessary to make it an opportunity for sustainable socioeconomic development.

In addition to improving soil fertility, biochar also acts as a sustainable carbon sink by sequestering carbon from atmospheric CO2 (one tonne of biochar being equivalent to at least 2.7 tonnes of CO2), thus contributing to mitigate climate change in the long term as requested by UN Sustainable Development Goal 13 “To combat climate change and its impacts”.
